We are pleased to announce a special 8-week percussion course with Nezih Antakli. Geared towards beginner and intermediate players, this course will teach rhythms, techniques, language, and culminate in learning a full group percussion piece.
Class Schedule is Tuesday evenings (skipping election day): 10/22, 10/29, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, 12/10, 12/17
All classes will meet at 7pm at Brooklyn Music School (126 St Felix St, Brooklyn, NY 11217).
In this immersive course, students will delve into the rich history and cultural significance of Middle Eastern drumming traditions from across the Middle East and North Africa. Through call and response techniques, Arabic drumming language, fundamental strokes, embellishments, practice drills, and soloing suggestions, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of these diverse musical styles. The course will culminate in a collaborative Middle Eastern drumming arrangement. Additionally, students will explore distinctive odd time signatures from Turkey and the Balkans, broadening their rhythmic repertoire and appreciation. Please bring your darbuka, doumbek, riqq, or frame drum.
Since earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Percussion Performance from the University for the Arts in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2004, Nezih Antakli has established himself as an accomplished percussionist and instructor. After relocating to the United States in 2007, he became an active member of the World Music scene in the wider New York City area, with a specialization in Middle Eastern and Latin percussion. Throughout his career, Nezih has performed and taught at renowned venues such as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, as well as on Broadway. Additionally, he has been fortunate to participate in numerous festivals worldwide, reflecting his passion for percussion and his dedication to sharing it with audiences from all walks of life.
