OUTSIDE: 4 TO 6PM: Zack Shimmel
plays Shamisen, a traditional Japanese string instrument (think 3 string banjo) originally used in classical Kabuki theater and various folk forms. Zack has specialized in the Tsugaru-shamisen, from the northern part of Japan - a percussive variation of the classic shamisen - and plays mostly folk music from the Tsugaru in the Aomori prefecture.
Zack grew up in Brooklyn but is based in Tokyo. He studied the Shamisen in Yokohama with master Sasakawa Kojin.
