In the workshop we will learn the art of surrender to the moment and finding how we are funny by chance. We will begin to discover how we are uniquely funny. Through play we will explore timing, connection with the audience, fantastic presence that holds the audience at the palm of a hand. You are invited to leave your idea of how you are funny behind and risk exploring a new terrain which will involve failure. There we might find a nugget of gold. You do not need prior experience of clowning or performance to participate. Just a willingness to be bad, and a dream to be brilliant.
JULIA MASLI is an award-winning clown from Estonia, based in London. All she wants to do is solve people's problems and eventually win the Nobel Prize, presented to those who have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind. But this plan keeps going wrong, as she continually wins prizes for comedy. In 2023, things spiraled when she set out to help audience members in ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, which you can read about in the New York times here.
This serious, important event was nominated for Edinburgh's top prize of Best Comedy Show, SKY Arts Best Comedy Award, Most Outstanding Show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, two Helen Hayes Awards and named number one comedy show of the year by The Guardian. The Public Theater is bringing back ha ha ha ha ha ha ha for an Off-Broadway encore run, May 30 - June 22 2025.
In addition to her work as a performer, Julia has taught at the prestigious École Philippe Gaulier and at various drama schools and Universities in the UK, as well as her own workshops all over the world.
