The court presents: Pandit Arup Chatterjee - tabla solo, and Jay Gandhi - bansuri performance.

Featuring tabla maestro Pandit Arup Chatterjee, the court is proud to present an evening of music in two parts: A bansuri performance by our very own Jay Gandhi. A NYC gem and one of the most innovative bansuri virtuosos anywhere, Jay Gandhi will take us on a melodious journey. He will be accompanied by one of The worlds finest tabla maestros, Arup Chatterjee. The evening will continue with a tabla solo performance by Mr. Chatterjee. Come early to indulge in the atmosphere and make new friends. Beginning at 8:00pm, the music will begin. After the concert, we'll all enjoy together home cooked vegetarian food, wine, refreshments, and great conversation. About the artists: Pt. Arup Chattopadhyay is recognized as one of the most outstanding and sought after Tabla artists of this generation. He has established himself as a top-notch accompanist as well as a formidable soloist. Arup's performances are admired for their exceptional tonal quality, clarity and deep compositional repertoire, all presented with an innate sense of rhythm and melody. Arup began learning Tabla at age six from his father, the eminent Tabla player, Pt. Pankaj Chattopadhyay. He then came under the tutelage of the world-renowned Tabla maestro Pt. Shankar Ghosh and is one of his premier disciples. He was awarded Top-Grade by All India Radio and Television. Arup has accompanied many of the leading musicians of India such as Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Rais Khan, Ustad Aashish Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt. Nayan Ghosh, Pt. Ajay Chakrabarty, Lakshmi Shankar, Pt. Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Ustad Rashid Khan, the late V.G. Jog, Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya, Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, Pt. Kushal Das, among others. Since 1998, Arup has been honored to accompany the legend Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar in tours throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and India, Including performances in Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, in US, and Barbican hall in London. Arup toured the U.K. with the late Pt. Deepak Choudhury several times and with Pt. Kartik Seshadri (since 1997) throughout the USA, Canada, India, Mexico and Australia. Arup is also a highly sought after teacher and since 1999 has been a visiting lecturer with University of California, San Diego; and previously a professor of Tabla at Baratiya Vidya Bhavan in London (Institute of Indian Culture). Jay Gandhi: A multifaceted artist, Jay's music is at once reflective of his devotion to his Guru, the inimitable legend of the bansuri, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, as well as a diverse range of other musical influences. Jay’s initial training in Hindustani music was under Smt. Kum Kum Sanyal (vocal) and later in bansuri under Pt. Ronu Majumdar and Pt. Raghunath Seth. Inspired to gain deeper knowledge of both the gayaki ang (vocal style) as well as the tantrakari ang (stringed instrument style), Jay has also taken valuable guidance from Pt Vidyadhar Vyas (vocal) and Pt. Nayan Ghosh (sitar, tabla). In 2006, he was blessed to have been accepted as a disciple of Padma Vibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, and has since had the honor of accompanying his Guru on stage for multiple concert tours. From his formative years, Jay’s musical inclinations were not limited to that of the Indian sub-continent and he was also strongly drawn to the music of the African diaspora and American Jazz in particular. With the desire to bring the sound and versatility of the bansuri into the jazz idiom in a meaningful way, he formally studied Jazz Performance at Oberlin College/Conservatory of Music (Ohio) and trained under such Jazz luminaries as Gary Bartz and the late Marcus Belgrave. Today, his journey into this world continues to evolve in new and promising ways, and in more recent times he has had the fortune of performing with such greats as Ravi Coltrane, Reggie Workman, Jeff “Tain” Watts, as well as of sharing the stage with one of the great voices of the tenor saxophone, Pharoah Sanders himself. A recipient of the prestigious AIIS Performing Arts Fellowship, Jay maintains a busy schedule performing for audiences across the globe. He currently is based out of New York City, where he is very active as both a teacher and performer and also as a founding member of Brooklyn Raga Massive, a prominent musicians collective.
