Inspired by the 1970s Ethiopian Jazz legends Mulatu Astatke, Getatchew Mekuria (the king of Ethiopian saxophone), and visionary saxophonist and improviser Ornette Coleman, Freethiopiques digs into exciting, expansive and compelling melodic groove, funk, and experimental jazz and blues. The collective combines the talents of a fiery horn section of Jessica Lurie (sax/flute, Tiptons Sax Quartet, Living Daylights) and Greg Glassman (trumpet, Taylor Mac), with a solid rhythm section of Brian Marsella (piano & organ, John Zorn), Jon Madof (guitar, Zion80), Yoshie Fruchter (bass, Sandcatchers, Zion80) and Chris Stromquist (drums, Slavic Soul Party, Kultur Shock).
