Two ensembles of forward-thinking musicians blending experimentalism, traditional musics, improvisation and new technology through myriad lenses of Koreanness, traditional shamanistic folk forms, mechanized bluegrass, and salvaged Sacred Harp hymnody.
"Looking for Koreanness"
Featuring artists Leo Chang, Gamin, Vong Pak, and Eddy Kwon, this work is a reflection on one seemingly simple question: What is Korean? Specifically, what does it mean for someone or something to be “Korean” in today’s society, where quotidian Korean life is deeply influenced by a myriad of different traditions, cultures, and politics? From a musical perspective, what is “Korean music”? This question is equally difficult to answer. "Looking for Koreanness" is not an attempt at defining Korean music, rather, it is an unraveling of multiple possibilities. Musicians will reconfigure forms that are often considered Korean because of their long history and juxtapose them against creative and experimental approaches without as long of a history within Korea and that slip away from resolute identifications.
"a vine that grew over the city and no one noticed"
Following their commissioned performance by Roulette Intermedium, Cleek Schrey and Weston Olencki perform new compositions and old music for fiddle, organ, and banjo. The duo will present a reimagining of "a vine that grew over the city and no one noticed", a work that navigates lineages of old time Appalachian music, rural geography, and the industrial histories of the Carolinas. The piece augments these old instruments through the use of instrumental preparations, electromechanical attachments, AI-synthesized tunes, and an array of exhumed wooden organ pipes to create a speculative futurism of the preserved past. Their work engages with sound that binds itself to remembrance, futurism, (nonlinear) time, and the living musical traditions of America.
