In his new album “Back to the Land,” he explores Ornette Coleman’s newly discovered compositions with a dense, experimental, and demanding sound, yet maintains a sense of vulnerability and purity that comes through especially in the quieter ballads. The ensemble—Ohad Talmor on tenor saxophone, Joel Ross on vibraphone, David Virelles on piano, Chris Tordini on double bass, and Eric McPherson on drums—captures the spirit and longing of that era with masterful authenticity.
