Brooklyn-based trumpet player and singer Sonny Singh (of Red Baraat) has launched a solo project inspired by Sikh kirtan with boundary-defying Punjabi anthems to uplift & ignite. Sonny and his band will play music from their upcoming debut solo album Chardi Kala, the Sikh concept of revolutionary eternal optimism.
Featured by NPR Music and Rolling Stone India in its first few months, the project embodies the many spiritual, political, and aesthetic elements that have shaped Sonny: a bolero-mariachi Sikh shabad on one track, a qawwali song with a reggae bass line on another, a bombastic Ghadar Party tribute in Punjabi and Spanish on yet another. The live show provides listeners with an experience of both introspective reflection and fervent urgency.
Featuring: Sonny Singh - vocals, trumpet, and dhol; Jonathan Goldberger - guitar; Ria Modak - guitar, harmonium, and vocals; Yuka Tadano - bass and Rohin Khemani - drums & tabla
