Break Up With Your Phone

Olito is the social club born out of our community — a place to gather, skip the small talk, and meet cool humans. You're always welcome, whether you come solo or with friends - the vibes are communal and thoughtful.

Inspired by the book , How to Break Up With Your Phone by Catherine Price and the work of Olio member and LMSW, Jaclyn Thomas, this Olito is an experiential night to see what it feels like to break up with our little black mirrors.

Catherine Price puts it plainly: we check our phones not because we need to, but because we can't sit with the discomfort of not knowing. Not knowing what we missed. Not knowing what someone thinks. Not knowing what's next. This night is about sitting in that feeling with other people.

What’s the deal?

Our phones are incredible. They’re also stealing our attention, our posture, our eye contact, and sometimes our ability to feel anything without documenting it.

So instead of doomscrolling alone, lets practice a night of putting the phone down, (or even picking it up and noticing what feelings and sensations arise) talking to new people and seeing what kind of accountability we can form after the evening.

This night uses rotating conversation prompts (you’ll move tables every ~10 minutes) to:

notice our phone habits without criticism
remember what it feels like to be undistracted
flirt with the idea of a different relationship to attention

How the night flows

8-9pm: This is the time to arrive, get settled, and order a first round or two.

9-10pm (Olito hour): This hour will be facilitated with a new conversation prompt every 10 minutes based on our theme, giving you a chance to meet all the lovely folks in the room.

10-11pm: Free flowing hang out time (maybe we'll form a lil group of people who want to continue doing phoneless activities and support each other in that endeavor.

11pm: Get those numbers! You don't have to go home, but you've gotta let us close down the bar because it's been a long day. You've got new crushes and new friends, and you're riding the high of creating new community. We'll see you next week!

In a community effort against the isolation and political nihilism that we can sometimes feel in this city, custom-made conversation cards on communal tables invite guests to explore culture, creativity, and connection with strangers at our social club/wine bar.

Where this comes from

This Olito is inspired by the work of Jaclyn Thomas, LMSW, a therapist and mindfulness director whose practice explores attention, presence, and modern distraction. Some prompts draw from How to Break Up With Your Phone by Catherine Price — translated out of self-help language and into human conversation.

No prep or reading expected, we all have plenty to talk about when it comes to this topic :)
