Melissa Almaguer is a multidisciplinary artist and tap percussionist from Mexico based in New York City. She uses tap dance as her primary tool for sound-making, expression, and liberation. Leading improvisation-driven groups, she creates immersive, evolving performances where sound, movement, and interaction unfold in real time.
Her artistic journey is deeply shaped by collaboration, drawing from a wide range of voices and traditions. She has worked with musicians like Moor Mother, David Virelles, William Parker, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, alongside tap pioneers such as Dormeshia, Derick K. Grant, Jason Samuels Smith, and Jumaane Taylor. Melissa’s work thrives on pushing boundaries and exploring new creative forms.
A recipient of The Next Jazz Legacy and Mutual Mentorship for Musicians, Melissa has performed at Lincoln Center, The Joyce Theater, National Sawdust, The Jazz Gallery, and others. She teaches at Steps on Broadway, guiding others to explore tap dance’s transformative power.
