Led by multi-instrumentalist and facilitator, Joel Karabo Elliott, this Olio will explore the ways in which music interacts with the natural environment, and how to use this relationship to create more harmony and vibrancy in your life and relationships.

Musical Ecology is a study of awareness, bringing together the textures of our landscape into the vibrations of sound and music. It is also a way of life, to bring us deeper into harmony with our surroundings, with our fellow humans, and within ourselves.

With a mix of musical performance, lecture and discussion - we will explore questions such as— what happens when we truly listen to the world around us? What happens when we allow our own song and life to emerge from that listening? How do we bring harmony to a chaotic and disconnected world? And, How do you live loud enough for the world to hear, and quiet enough to hear the world?

About our teacher for the evening: JoEl is a musical composer, performer, arts educator and community regeneration guide based in southern Appalachia, USA (Asheville, North Carolina) and southern Africa (South Africa and Mozambique). As the founder of Roots Grown Deep world music & healing arts ensemble, he has produced and released 12 albums of music and presented in 17 countries around the world, serving children, adults, communities and professional institutions with practical tools for the expansion of personal and collective enlightenment. He holds an M.A. in Consciousness & Human Potential from Maharishi Int’l University.

More About Musical Ecology
In relation to human behavior and individual and collective consciousness, Musical Ecology is a reality-based way of Being informed by the subjective and objective truth that all relative matter vibrates and creates a sound, and this sound has its source in eternal, unchanged Consciousness. Thus, Musical Ecology unites the biological with the ethereal, the material with the spiritual, the organic with the celestial. As Maharishi Mahesh Yogi says, “All life hums with the organizing power of Natural Law.”

Evening Flow

7 PM – Doors open. Settle in, grab a drink, and meet a friend.
8 PM – The Olio begins: an intimate, interactive lecture and guided exploration.
9 PM – We shift into a social experience, discussing ideas with others in the room while the teacher joins and floats between conversations.
10 PM - Last call at the bar and we'll start to wind down the evening.

What Is an Olio?

Think Olio is an ongoing experiment in lifelong learning. We are a community of open-minded people who gather to exchange ideas with new friends and connect over art, literature, and philosophy.

Our $30 membership gives you two events for the price of one!

An Olio is what we call the social learning events we’ve been organizing since 2015. A blend between a lecture and a house party, Olios are led by a teacher who loves sharing their passions and the room is filled with curious, open-minded New Yorkers.

Our goal is to spark new perspectives, ignite curiosity, and enjoy ourselves socially—an alternative to typical nightlife options.

Disclaimer: By purchasing a ticket, you agree to have your photo/video used for social media/marketing materials. If you prefer to not have your photo taken, feel free to send us a note.
