Unicorn Bar and Reflections on a Silver Screen present a FREE screening of beloved '90s sapphic classic FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, on Sunday, September 14th at 7pm.
Based on the bestselling novel by Fannie Flagg, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES tells, on the one hand, the story of Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates), a disaffected housewife who befriends the elderly and free-spirited Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). It is Ninny, however, who sends us back in time to tell, on the other hand, the gloriously queer-tinged story of tomboy Idgie (Masterson) and straightlaced Ruth (Parker) -- two "special friends" who face the vagaries of life in Depression-era Alabama while owning and operating the Whistle Stop Café.
This screening is co-hosted by Ben Rendich, a local filmmaker whose work focuses on themes of queerness and self-discovery. He will lead a post-screening discussion with anyone who'd care to stick around and unpack this very charming-if-yesteryear depiction of lovely, latent lesbianism.
