Tim Berne is a composer, saxophonist, and bandleader known for his work in jazz and improvised music. He started playing the saxophone in college, inspired by the album Dogon A. D., and later studied with Julius Hemphill in New York. Since 1982, he has performed internationally with various ensembles, including Snakeoil and Sun of Goldfinger. Berne has released over fifty recordings on labels such as Soul Note and ECM, in addition to running his own label, Screwgun Records. He has taught extensively since the late 90s and has received numerous international awards and residencies.
