Lubomir Smilenov delves into the rich intersection of world music traditions with a particular emphasis on Bulgarian folk influences. This duo, with Matt Moran on Tupan, brings to life complex, odd-time rhythms and the distinct sounds of traditional instruments like the Kaba Gaida bagpipes and the Gadulka, an archaic bowed instrument. For their upcoming performance at Jalopy, Lubomir and Matt will offer a curated set highlighting the historical and cultural significance of these instruments. Lubomir has showcased his music at renowned venues, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ragas Live Festival, Golden Fest, and various other concert spaces across New York City.
Senavazi features Mehrnam Rastegari on Iranian kamancheh and voice, Daro Behroozi on clarinet, Persian ney and saxophone, and Matt Moran on davul+, Senavazi is a new trio playing a repertoire that draws from Persian, Kurdish, Azeri, Roma, Turkish, and Arabic traditions, as well as original tunes inspired by sounds from the region. The group highlights unique syncopated grooves from diverse Iranian folk traditions that are less commonly performed in a global context alongside the slammin' 9's, 7's, and 2/4's that have been moving fans of creative instrumental dance music for so many years.
Trendafilka is a modern exploration of European polyphonic traditions. Founded in New Orleans in 2016, the group grew out of a common desire for group singing as well as a collective fascination of culture and ancient traditions. Trendafilka, named after the Balkan wild rose, draws repertoire from areas of Eastern Europe - the Balkans, the Baltics, the Caucasus, and the Eurasian Steppe - that hold rich cultural traditions of polyphonic singing. In Trendafilka's performances, songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Greece, and Georgia are represented in 3 to 5 distinct vocal lines. Dissonances and harmonies weave and swell throughout each song as common human themes are explored: grief, love, loss, jokes, and magic. Shifting between styles with ease, the singers work to blend their eleven unique voices into one unified sound, creating a musical tapestry greater than the sum of its original parts.
