Barry Oreck and Friends, Jesse Miller (guitar and vocals), Rima Fand (violin and vocals) and Adam Armstrong (bass) will celebrate the release of their new album, Leap Year, at Jalopy Theater on Saturday January 22, 2022 at 7:30. Leap Year features 9 new songs written in the past two years and one updated tune from their first album. The concert will also be the release-party-that-never- was for their EP, We Fit Together, which came out in the midst of the pandemic and rose to #9 on the folk charts in May 2020.
Known for his thought-provoking, often darkly humorous prose, Oreck’s songs encompass a range of topics from the personal to the political. His songs, touching on societal and ecological issues as well as the perils of aging and long-forgotten love, harness the power of music to connect and inspire others. Oreck’s style does not fit neatly into a single genre – his major musical influences include John Prine, Steven Sondheim, Dave Van Ronk, Odetta. Growing up in the Chicago folk and blues tradition, Barry studied with folk luminaries Steve Goodman and Frank Hamilton among many others at the famed Old Town School of Folk Music. Steeped in new and traditional music and protest songs, he writes music in a variety of styles from bluesy finger picking to driving bluegrass. His songs have been described as “unique wry, thought-provoking lyrics, sweet harmonies, with a satisfying touch of funk.”
This s the third record for the Brooklyn-based band, with their tight vocal harmonies, intricate instrumental interplay, and complex but catchy rhythms. “Listeners are treated to an engaging musical arrangement, tender vocal performances, and genuine thoughtfulness…” Brandon Watts, Please Pass the Indie
