An Eight-Week Group Class with Pat Mangan
Mondays at 7:00pm: 9/14, 9/21 9/28, 10/5, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9
NEW CLASS OFFERING FROM JALOPY!!!

In this class, we will explore the fundamentals of traditional Irish music on the fiddle. We will learn about stylistic nuances that make Irish fiddle playing different from other styles of folk music such as old time or bluegrass, while also drawing a throughline via some commonalities in these traditions.

We will learn a polka, a waltz, a jig, and possibly a reel, exploring various rhythms common to Irish traditional music. Through the exploration of these tunes, we will talk about important elements of the style including bowing patterns and left hand ornamentation. Tunes will be taught in a hybrid method to accommodate different learning styles - focusing on the oral tradition, while also working with sheet music for those who are able to read it. By the end of the semester we will have some fun, common tunes under our belt that will be great to play at any traditional seísiun!

No prior experience is necessary, however a basic understanding of the violin (string names, finger and bow positions) is helpful!

Despite the rising costs and lower funding streams that are affecting cultural institutions, Jalopy still wants to be a home for everyone seeking to learn and develop their musical practice. Therefore, this semester, we are offering the classes based on a sliding scale, inviting each student to choose a price based on their income level. Those of you who can afford to pay more than the breakeven cost, will be making it feasible for Jalopy to give scholarships to those who cannot afford the courses.

Please note that these numbers are only suggestions, and you are free to pay what feels manageable and appropriate for you based on all your life's circumstances, not just annual income. As usual, you can inquire and apply for financial aid by emailing lynette@jalopytheatre.org.

Sliding Scale Chart based on Annual income:

$0 - $20k / year: scholarship (partial or full depending on availability)

$20k-$30k / year: $300

$30k - $40k / year: $350

$40k -$50k / year: $400

$50k -70k / year: $450

$70k and up: $500

Pat Mangan is a Brooklyn-based fiddler. He is a two-time All-Ireland champion. He made his Broadway debut at age 16 with “Riverdance on Broadway” and has since performed with the Grammy award winning Irish dance production and other luminaries of Celtic music in over 30 countries on every continent. Pat's dynamic stage presence and heartfelt, energetic playing have enthralled music lovers around the world.
He has toured with Cathie Ryan, performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Moya Brennan of Clannad, Lincoln Center with Riverdance composer Bill Whelan, and played in the hit Broadway musical "Come From Away." His playing has been featured in ads for major brands including Tullamore Dew and Guinness, and he has also recorded with a range of artists from trad music legends including Brian Conway, Tony DeMarco, and John Whelan, to pop and dance music heavyweights Phillip Phillips and Kerri Chandler. Pat is also a regular featured guest at New York’s most renowned traditional Irish music session spots such as The 11th Street Bar, Swift Hibernian Lounge, and The Dead Rabbit.
His latest album “The Frost Is All Over” is a mix of traditional favorites, original compositions, and a few surprises. Irish Music Magazine calls it “a stylish album, full of heart and thoughtfulness,” and The Irish Echo says “fiddle virtuoso Patrick Mangan’s playing is top tier.”
Pat has taught for many years at the Irish Arts Center, and has also been an instructor at renowned trad music weeks such as The Swannanoa Gathering, and the Catskills Irish Arts Week. He also teaches privately, and has hosted a weekly online group class since 2020.
