Celebrate the holiday season with a truly singular, shimmering, bittersweet musical evening as K.C. Jones and Daniel Coolik bring A Very Melancholy Christmas to the Jalopy Theatre. Steeped in vintage charm, warm pathos, and the velvet glow of a dark cocktail lounge, this show reimagines classic holiday music through the duo’s lush, intimate, and irresistibly nostalgic lens.

It started with a postcard K.C. received. It was a simple “Season Greetings” postcard and scribbled on the back , “Christmas Album?”, signed, Clarence and Clarice. No address, no phone number, nothing. As bizarrely as they had come into our life they had vanished after we recorded the “Spirited Melancholy” EP in August and September of 2020. Journalists have asked us for their address or phone number but we never had it to give, I mean, we didn’t even have their last names. Even we had further questions for them that would have to remain unanswered. Not a word until this mysterious “Holiday” postcard, received in the non-holiday month of September.

For those of you new to the story of Clarence and Clarice, they were a much–whispered-about production and writing team, rumored to have ghostwritten or produced for well-known labels of the 1960s and ’70s such as Speciality, Tangerine, Starday, and Kama Sutra. How much of that is true remains a mystery—since their names never appeared on any official credits, their legacy lived mostly as musical lore. Which made our chance encounter with them all the more bizarre and serendipitous.

Now, back to the album you’re reading about: A Very Melancholy Christmas. Not long after K.C. showed me the postcard she’d received, their burgundy 1972 Buick Riviera suddenly rolled into her driveway. They lifted the fastback trunk, pulled out their only suitcase—a well-worn leather travel-bar case—and knocked on her door. The four of us got right to work… well, we made cocktails first, then got to work, combing through songs and imagining a new way to interpret the holidays. What you’re holding here is the digital treasure of that quest: a Christmas filled with joy, pathos, warmth, and the bittersweet echoes of melodies we all know.

About the Artists
Based in Lafayette, LA, K.C. Jones and Daniel Coolik perform together across a constellation of musical projects. As a duo, they bring their signature “spirited melancholy” to stages from the Gulf Coast to the Gold Coast, blending vocals, guitar, bass, and a deep love of vintage soundscapes.
