Know Your Voice! Enjoy Your Voice! - A Four-Week Vocal Techniques Class with Joy Askew

Thursdays, 7-8:30 pm: 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, and 2/26

Your voice leads a song! Renowned vocal coach and singer Joy Askew joins us for a four-week vocals class. Through guided vocal exercises, we will explore the full range of our voices and grow in confidence and expression. Singing a diverse selection of songs together, will strengthen both vocal ability and performance.

Joy's approach draws on the strength of embodied singing, using gravity and movement to trigger freedom and lightness in the body, freeing the throat, tongue, and jaw, and helping singers take their sound from a whisper to a roar. You'll experiment with how your voice resonates best, try exercises to stretch to places you thought you couldn't reach, and work towards freeing up difficulties that challenge flexibility in singing. Find the true sound of your own voice and make it work for you!

Joy Askew (https://www.joyaskew.com/) has enjoyed a stellar career playing alongside music icons like Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson, Rodney Crowell, Jack Bruce, and Quincy Jones. She has performed with her own band on stages from CBGBs to festivals in the UK, USA, Japan, and Europe, and has opened for David Bowie and for David Byrne. Along the way, she has sung in a choir featured on an EP by Sufjan Stevens, collaborated with a British brass band, and released a downtempo jazz electronica album.
