Over the last three years, StoryTell has gathered New Yorkers to build empathy, belonging, and connection through personal storytelling. This year, we’re collaborating with Sound Mind on a new series that connects our community to the stories and people shaping the fabric of the music world in our city.

There are so many artists, makers, creators, and community catalysts we encounter in our daily lives,. yet we rarely pause to learn their stories. Story in Sound is about slowing down and listening. It’s about connecting the StoryTell community to the humans behind the music; the people who make up the drumbeat of our neighborhoods, and exploring how story and song intertwine.

Our First Featured Guest: Umer Piracha

We’re honored to welcome Umer Piracha as our inaugural guest. Umer is a Pakistani-American musician, composer, and community builder based in New York City. Known for weaving together South Asian devotional traditions, folk influences, and contemporary improvisation, his work bridges cultures, spiritual lineages, and neighborhoods. Through intimate performances and collaborative gatherings, Umer creates spaces where music becomes a vehicle for connection, presence, and collective experience.

Umer represents exactly what this series is about: an artist whose music carries deep lineage and personal narrative — and whose story reveals how culture, migration, identity, and community live inside the songs we hear. Throughout the evening, Umer will share stories from his journey and guide moments of shared music-making — inviting us not just to listen, but to participate.
