In this film we learn of the distinctive thick facial makeup which is made of bright coloured pigments, coconut oil, lime and rice paste among other ingredients. A complex colour code mapped to different character types including the good and the noble, the antihero, and the demonic among other classifications is in place. There are detailed rules for the type of makeup and use of face props for different characters. This film takes us into the magical Kathakali makeup room and offers glimpses of the slow and laborious process of makeup which extends for six hours or more before a show. Colourful and decorative costumes are everywhere as an array of mainly mythological characters are carefully brought to life.
