ABOUT THE ARTISTS

A multifaceted artist, Jay Gandhi is among the leading contemporary voices of the bansuri
(North Indian bamboo flute). A senior disciple of the legendary Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Jay’s
music reflects decades of deep immersion in Hindustani classical tradition, while also embracing
influences from the world of Jazz and beyond. He is a world traveling cross-genre performer,
educator and a founding member of the Brooklyn Raga Massive and the Brooklyn Court, two
groundbreaking NYC musicians collectives.

Jay was fortunate to have been immersed in Hindustani classical music from his childhood.
Beginning with vocal training under Smt. Kum Kum Sanyal and bansuri training from Pt. Ronu
Majumdar and Pt. Raghunath Seth, he also received valuable guidance from Pt Vidyadhar Vyas
and Pt. Nayan Ghosh. Since 2006, he has been deepening his artistry under the guidance of his
Guru, the legendary Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia.

Alongside his deep commitment to raga music, Jay has drawn much inspiration from the rich
and varied musical traditions of the African diaspora. While he was a student at Oberlin College/
Conservatory he studied under such Jazz greats as Gary Bartz and Marcus Belgrave broadening
his improvisational approach.

Through the years, he has been fortunate to perform with many renowned artists from India
and beyond, including his Guru Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, the late Pandit Jasraj, Pandit
Krishna Mohan Bhatt, Pandit Nayan Ghosh, Yacouba Sissoko (Mali), Noura Mint Seymali
(Mauritania), Amir El-Safar (Iraq/USA), Adam Rudolph, Hidayat Khan, and Abhik Mukherjee.
He has also collaborated with some of the greats in the Jazz world including Reggie Workman,
Wynton Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and shared the stage with the late great
legend of the tenor saxophone, Pharoah Sanders.

He has been featured on numerous acclaimed albums - including the “Ragas Live
Retrospective”, “Coltrane Raga Tribute”, sarodist Alam Khan’s Grand Tapestry, and Adam
Rudolph’s “Ragmala”. Additionally he recently recorded for the yet to be released Hollywood
feature film “Prisoners of Paradise”.

Mir Naqibul Islam is a New York based tabla player from “Farukhabad” gharana. Mir has been trained in the traditional guru-shisya style of Indian Classical music from Pt. Ashoke Paul, disciple of the great tabla guru Pt. Jnan Prakash Ghosh.

Mir presents tabla solo recitals and regularly accompanies vocalists, instrument players and dancers from the Indian tradition. He also performs regularly with musicians from a wide variety of other genres, bringing tabla to Jazz, Chamber Music, Middle-Eastern music, hip hop and other contexts.

He is continuing his talim simultaneously with the great Farukhabad Mastero Pt Anindo Chatterjee and Pt. Ashoke Paul. His style has also been enriched by training with Pt. Gopal Mishra and Pt. Suresh Talwalkar in past as well.

We look forward to sharing this special night with you!
