Mark Donato writes eccentric and poetic rock songs and performs earthy, experimental pop with several of the area's finest musicians. Donato possesses all the wit, craft, and command of irony of an old school tunesmith, but adds a sense of urgent generosity and willing innocence for our own cynical times.
His band includes drummer Eric Parker (Joe Cocker, Stevie Winwood, many others), bassist Mark Lerner (Rosine, Flat Old World, Life in a Blender), and Jay Sherman-Godfrey (Wire Troop, Laura Cantrel, World Famous Bluejays). Donato and his band have played all around the Woodstock area -- at the Colony, the lost and lamented BSP, Kleinert James Gallery, Green Kill, the Beverly (also gone), and other venues.

Once called "one of the best songwriters around" by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, the Pittsburgh native found himself in the New York City of the '90s, working as a drummer and singer with John Linnell (also of They Might Be Giants) and The Statesmen, Amy Allison, Flat Old World, Rosine, and the Oswalds (songwriting vehicle of author Camden Joy), while piling up songs for his own releases.
Donato's sixth and latest record, the opulent At the literal crack of dawn (SubFamily Records), finds the songwriter relocated to the mountains and considering fresh starts and new beginnings, and how to make it always so. A poet-grade lyricist and a daring melodist, Donato writes songs that are effortlessly profound and tuneful, layered with subtle irony, humanistic pathos, and a kind of psychological perfect pitch.
