ABOUT
Lyon Leifer studied Western flute in his native Chicago and studied at Juilliard before becoming a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Pursuing his interest in Hindustani music and flute playing in it, he undertook a Fulbright to India in 1965. With the immense good fortune of being sent for lessons to Devendra Murdeshwar, and remaining in India for five years, this learning relationship continued until the master's passing in 2000. With his Guruji's blessings and facilitation, he was also able to associate with and learn from numerous master musicians, now departed. These included Ali Akbar Khan, KG Ginde, Girija Devi, Yunus Hussein Khan, Ramesh Nadkarni and others. Mr. Leifer still benefits from opportunities to learn from some of today's most distinguished senior musicians including LK Pandit and Nayan Ghosh. Mr. Leifer is also author of a highly successful manual for self-instruction, "How to Play the Bansuri" which details important aspects of the Ghosh-Murdeshwar approach to both technique and raga delineation.
