BIO DATA SABINA MUMTAZ ISLAM Music has been an appetizer to her since her childhood days. A child prodigy born in a cultured family in Guwahati, Sabina’s remarkable musical journey was set off by her father Late Janab Nurul Islam. At a tender age of ten, she won the 1st prize in All Assam Music Compitition .Later, while obtaining bachelors degree in English Literature as honours from Cotton College and Diploma in Tourism& Management and Computer Science, she simultaneously enriched herself musically. In the year 1988, she became ‘Sangeet Visharad’ from Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth. Sabina’s classical sojourn further flourished when she joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy ,Kolkata in 1997 ,the hub of classical music, trained by Janab Jainul Abedin and then under Late Pandit Sunil Bose - an exponent of Agra Gharana. She later came under the tutelage of Vidushi Subhra Guha , one of the doyens of the same Gharana, acquiring the prestigious scholarship in 1999. Sabina had been a scholar at ITC SRA from where she has undergone rigorous training from her guru in the famous guru-shishya tradition and for the last 24years still continues to do so. She too adheres to the astute guidelines of Padmashree Pandit Vijay Kr Kichlu, one of the great exponents of Agra Gharana.She has now blossomed into a full-fledged performer and performs nationally as well as across the globe. She is an ”A” grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan in both Khyal &Light Classical (Thumri/Dadra/Kajri/ Chaiti/Tappa etc). Apart from this, she also delivers performances in various television channels regularly. She has playbacked Chaiti in the bengali debut film "Har Har Byomkesh". Sabina is an empaneled artist of ICCR(Indian Council for Cultural Relations) Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Govt.of India in both Khyal and Light Classical Music. Major Recitals and Awards Sabina has performed successfully in the major cities across India like Delhi,Mumbai,Bangaluru,Dhanbad, Vadodra,Amritsar,Allahabad, Pondicherry, Banaras,Dharwar etc besides performing in Guwahati and different places/cities in West Bengal.Her concert reached far and wide outside her country like USA,Canada and Bangladesh. In 1989 Sabina was a participant and winner in the All India National Integration Camp & workshop in Bangalore. In the year 1991 Sabina was awarded for representing the state of Assam in the light music and classical categories in All India Inter College Youth Festival Dhanbad (Indian School of Mines). She has earned numerous awards and fellowships between 2003 and 2012. Among them the most exceptional are the ‘Young Artist Award’ under EZCC and the Jnana Pravaha fellowship for being an astoundingly promising musician. She achieved a Gold Medal too from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture,Government of India delivered to her by the then Governor WB Shri Viren J.Shah. She delivered her performances in the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy, 103rd Shastriya Sangeet Sammelan and at Amritsar. Sabina was blessed to perform National Anthem in front of His Excellency President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in the occasion of 54th All India AGM International Seminar on “Indian Aviation – Challenges & Perspactives” under AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA in January 2003, Kolkata. Sabina enthralled the audiences by her mellifluous and soulful voice and highly appreciated as having a Golden Voice by the President himself.Between 2006- 2020 in the recent past she has been performing in the major platforms of Indo Occidental Symbiosis at Kala Mandir,at Uttam Manch for Sangeet Piyasi organization, G.D Birla Sabhaghar for Sangeet Ashram, Okakaru Bhavan for Janana Pravaha, concerts organized by India International Center ( IIC ) Delhi, “Agra Gharana Samaroh” in BHARAT BHAVAN-Bhopal (2015),Aurovill Pondicherry, Shrutinandan Kolkata, ‘Arpan’ Festival organised by ITC Sangeet Research Academy,Thumri Festival in Choudhury House, VSK baithak(purab ang gaikee) at WWF Delhi, NCPA Mumbai, ”VASUNDHARA” Festival of Dance &Music by Women on the 9th Punyatithi of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi at Dharwar,ITC Sangeet Sammelans, HCL Concert , UTSAAH Series #spreading happiness conducted by Smt. Durga Jasraj, SARB AKAL, Calgary to name a few. Recently she has been invited to pay tribute to Pt.Subhankar Bannerjee in"Shanti" series by Arati Music Foundation, 25th silver jubilee of Shrutinandan's Thumri Festival. Even in western countries she showcased her versatility with spectacular success. From 2006 to 2009 she had been a regular visitor to USA. Sabina solely represented North Indian Classical Music in World Music Festival ‘Navaratri’in Wesleyan University ,Connecticut which was one of her remarkable achievements.She too performed in the prestigious platforms like The Arch, Chhandayan in New York City and in cities like Chicago, New Jersey, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Canada etc. She is a former faculty of classical vocal lessons at AAICM (American Academy of Indian Classical Music) NYC. From the year 2010 onwards Sabina has been going to Bangladesh for offering music Sessions as well as for performance.She had been performing there under the aegis of ITC Sangeet Research Academy and Bengal Foundation and Fulki. Eminent personalities like late Pandit Kishan Maharaj, late Pandit Rajan Sajan Mishra, late Vidushi Girija Devi, Gundecha Brothers highly appreciated her for her wonderful soulful renditions. Sabina’s wide repertoire and versatilities includes Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri, Tappa as well as Ghazal, Bhajan, Sufi, regional assamese,bengali songs etc. She is proficient in the ‘Poorav ang’ gayaki of Banaras. Her dulcet voice attuned with perfect ‘aakar’ provides an impeccable blend of perfect raagdari, laykaari, taans, bol taans on one hand and aesthetics on the other.
