Sandeep Mahavir – Kathak Dancer / Director Pandit Sandeep Mahavir is an acclaimed Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer, actor, and teacher from Mumbai. Born on 15 July 1975, he belongs to a distinguished family of musicians associated with the Jaipur Gharana. He was introduced to music by his father, the late Shri K. Mahavir, an eminent classical vocalist and composer, and later trained in Kathak under Guru Madhurita Sarang. Over the years, Sandeep Mahavir has performed at prestigious dance festivals across India and internationally. His artistic work blends the traditional grammar of Kathak with theatrical storytelling, and he has choreographed numerous dance productions, television performances, and experimental works with renowned artists. A significant milestone in his career was receiving the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2013–2014) from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, one of India’s highest recognitions for young performing artists. He has also been honoured with titles such as Sringarmani, Nritya Shiromani, and the Young Achiever Award. As an educator, he leads Nritya Darshan in Mumbai, where he trains young dancers in the art of Kathak while promoting India’s classical dance heritage. Sandeep Mahavir has also made notable contributions to musical theatre. He co-produced, choreographed, and starred in the grand stage musical “Abhimanyu – The Fastest Feet” at the Kingdom of Dreams, an ambitious production that showcased Kathak on a Broadway-style stage. His artistic vision continues to focus on preserving the authenticity of Kathak while presenting it in contemporary theatrical formats for audiences around the world.
