Description

July 12th-16th, 9am-3pm
Who: girls age 10-13

In this week long camp, students will build a ukulele from scratch- starting with a pile of wood and materials on Monday morning and finishing with a real, working instrument to take home at the end of the week. This camp is perfect for girls with an interest in making things with their hands, arts and crafts, and music, but no prior woodworking experience is required.

Building something from scratch gives girls lots of tools to carry with them- they can develop their ability to problem solve, to learn new skills, and to work independently. This camp aims to give each student the space to learn and grow in great company- we will be visited by some of Brooklyn Lutherie’s clientele during the week for performance and conversation, highlighting the experience of women who work in the music field.

We will be working at tables with hand tools- no power tools are required, and only safe tools will be used. Early drop off and late pickup are available, and sliding scale spots are also available.

Give your child the unique and rewarding experience of building a working instrument under the eye of an experienced luthier!

bio:
Mamie Minch is a musician and luthier living and working in New York City. She co-owns and operates Brooklyn Lutherie, a vibrant and busy women-owned instrument repair and restoration shop in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where rock stars and rocking chair pickers alike come to get some TLC for their instruments. As an active blues performer, she writes and sings songs that sound like they’ve been stored in her 1930s National steel guitar for decades.
