5 day workshop to work on becoming a better performer and a deep dive into the world of clown,
play and complete stupidity.
In this workshop we are searching for what makes you uniquely funny as a performer.

The first part of the workshop will focus on the performers physicality.
We will work on amping up your stage presence, playfulness and following your comedic
impulses.

In the second part of the workshop we approach the land of stupidity.
The clown is an absolute idiot, but always with an immense pleasure to be on stage and a special
connection with the audience. Through flops and failure the clown can show their vulnerability to
the audience.
With sensitivity and care for the audience the clown can share their mistakes - their
humanity - and create a special connection with the audience. Building on this special connection
the clown can be totally free to fail, be bad and make the audience belly laugh. Like genuinely
laugh. A lot.

Suitable for standups, actors, improvisors, clowns acrobats and performers who want to sharpen
their funny bone, tune up their stage presence and find the freedom to be stupid, silly, funny and
free.

This is a safe place to play, have fun and take chances as an artist.
Expect to be on the floor taking big risks, being utterly stupid, laughing a lot
and being harshly criticised by a friendly Norwegian.

No prior experience with clown required, but most suitable for performers or people who want to
be on stage.

ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Viggo Venn is a the clown, comedian and Norwegian that won Britain’s Got Talent in 2023 with his
stupid Safety Vest routine - much to the annoyance of Simon Cowell.

Viggo is a staff teacher at renowned clown school Ecole Philippe Gaulier in France, were he also
studied. In addition to his alma mater Ecole Philippe Gaulier (FRA) Viggo has sought at West
London University (UK), Bath Spa University (UK), The Melbourne International Comedy Festival
(AUS), The Sydney Comedy Festival (AUS) +++.

Viggo is a working clown and has toured the globe several times playing in Australia, The US and
Europe with both his clown double act “Zach&Viggo” and his clown solo shows.

Performing at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Festival Montreal, Comedy Central Stage, UCB, Hollywood Improv and Second City Chicago to name a few.
He won the “Best Comedy” award at the Brighton Fringe in 2016, won the “Time Out Edinburgh Award” in 2017 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and won the “NATYS New Act Of The Year” in London in 2022.

“A clown workshop is what changed my life, got me out of my head and into the world of laughter
and clown. That’s why I love teaching these 5-day workshops.” - Viggo Venn

This action packed one day workshop is designed for comedians and performers of all experience levels who are curious about using clowning techniques to expand facets of their own stage work. In this one day we will create moments of magic and moments of failure, pushing ourselves past our comfort zones and into new comedic territory.

Corey Podell is an actress, director, and teaching artist. Most recently, she directed the stage shows Mr. Chonkers, The Underground Monk Show, Vanessa 5000, Gutterplum, and Queen of Fishtown. Corey is a founding member of the LA based clown troupe ‘Clown Zoo’ and has years of experience performing, teaching and directing at The Groundlings Theater and UCB. Corey's work has been described as 'stupidly beautiful and beautifully stupid' which makes everyone in her family proud, if not slightly confused.

John Norris is an absurdist comedian. He has studied clown, bouffon, mime, theater, and sketch and improv comedy. In 2022, he created the “cult” “hit” “show” called Mr. Chonkers. He has a credit score of well over 600. Which is extremely impressive considering what he’s chosen to do with his life. For helpful information on how to lower your credit score (and to check your score for free!) please visit www.freecreditreport.com

Being simple isn’t easy… We are rarely satisfied with ourselves, trusting that we are enough. Often, we try too hard to impress others. We put so much pressure on ourselves that we create a state of fear or immobility to try new things. So we play it safe because taking a risk might lead to failure. And failure…well nobody wants that, right?

But what if we could turn the concept of failure around? What if we could actually…enjoy it?? Imagine how much pressure we’d take off ourselves and, perhaps, others around us. And what if we could have fun succeeding through failure? How ridiculous a world it would be if we could actually delight in the things that go wrong!

Through the exploration of openness, honesty and vulnerability, we will uncover what is uniquely funny about you! Get ready to embrace all your idiosyncrasies— they are your greatest comedy assets. Join Carol Lee Sirugo for this 3 hour clown intensive. All levels are welcome, including absolute beginner. Space is limited, register today!

More about the Workshop:

This workshop will ideally help you find your freedom and ridiculousness on stage and connect more deeply with an audience. This workshop can be quite difficult at times. In addition to encouraging things you do on stage that are working, Dr. Brown is also there to point out when something is NOT working. With the acceptance of failure, you can learn to be more open and vulnerable in front of a group of strangers. If you do not respond positively to admitting failure, this workshop may not be for you. When you are ready to LAUGH at your failure, the work can begin. This and your sensitivity to an audience, will help expose how stupid, vulnerable, and ridiculous you (and only you) can be. Note - In addition to improvisational clown exercises, time during this workshop will also be dedicated to devising clown numbers.

More about Dr. Brown:
Dr. Brown (aka Philip Burgers) learned about comedy and silliness at the Ecole Philippe Gaulier. Since then, has travelled and toured solo and kids shows around the world and has worked in TV and film as a director, writer and actor. He has been teaching clown workshops all over the world since 2009. His 2012 solo show 'Befrdgth', won The Edinburgh Comedy Award and The Barry Award for Best Comedy at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Burgers can be seen in Netflix's 'The Characters' and 'Feel Good' and in UK Channel 4's 'Dr Brown Comedy Blaps' and '4funnies'. He wrote and starred in the multi-award-winning short film 'The Passage'. He also directed the Netflix Comedy Special, 'Nate' and ran the Los Angeles theatre, 'The Lyric Hyperion' from 2016-2020.

Do you have an act that needs polishing? We’ll polish it! Do you need help coming up with an idea? Just come in ready to play and we’ll find something!

Often times something that gets a laugh in the classroom doesn’t work in front in front of an actual audience. And not all audiences are the same. We’ll hone your ear to find laughs and material that work outside the context of a classroom filled with clowns.

We’ll work on structuring your act, finding your own personal “clown logic” and how to adjust your relationship to different audiences on different nights in different types of theaters.

Jeff is a comedian and filmmaker based in New York City. He’s a graduate of the Clown Conservatory at the San Francisco Circus Center and studied Decroux-based corporeal mime at the Hippocampe Project in Paris. Jeff’s performed Insidious: The Further You Fear, Circus Flora, Blanc de Blanc: Uncorked, The Last Match, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and The Late Show with David Letterman. His comedy clown duo, Jeff and Buttons, has performed at Ars Nova, Butterboy, Upright Citizens Brigade, and 59E59.

“Carol is one of the few teachers in the city who is ready, willing and able to play the clown along with the rest of the class, and that makes a huge difference!”

54:T4ba,

Do you have an act that needs polishing? We’ll polish it! Do you need help coming up with an idea? Just come in ready to play and we’ll find something!

Often times something that gets a laugh in the classroom doesn’t work in front of an actual audience.

Credits include Insidious: The Further You Fear, Circus Flora, Blanc de Blanc: Uncorked, The Last Match, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and The Late Show with David Letterman. His comedy clown duo, Jeff and Buttons, has performed at Ars Nova, Butterboy, Upright Citizens Brigade, and 59E59.

55:Tbd9,

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS:
“I get such a kick out of Carol's class! I walk away from her classes with a few more very practical tools in my comedy tool belt. Carol's class is a brave space where I can be vulnerable and open."
—Matt Higgins Actor, Improviser, Stand-up

“Through Carol, my confidence as a comedian has grown. She challenged me to be simple and honest, which has resulted in more truthful and compelling performances.”
—Kate Owens Theatrical Clown, Actor

“Carol’s workshop has plunged me into depths of myself I wasn’t aware I had. For the experienced clown or the curious performer, you will find your vulnerability and comic genius live in the same place inside you, and expressing it, the greatest reward.”
—Kevin Mejia Actor, Comic

\"I took classes with the wonderful Tallie Medel and it helped me grow as a stand-up comedian!\" -Maria Bamford

What happens in a clown class? We introduce ourselves, we have a nice long warmup, our feet get squishy and our heads get floaty, we play with tennis balls and hats, we do group games and solo exercises, and we leave room at the end for questions. It’s active and exciting and my face hurts from laughing every time. You’ll probably leave with a new friend. Clown is antifascist and you are brave!

$: Skill trades are accepted as payment! Clown economy, beb. Please email contact@talliemedel.com if this works better for you these days!

& BIPOC take class for freeeeee
