Spencertown Academy Roots & Shoots Concerts Series presents New York-based jazz chanteuse Laura Anglade celebrating the release of her new album, “Something’s Coming\". Anglade’s artistry has long been rooted in the Great American Songbook, but musical theater sits at the heart of her new project. Rather than approaching show tunes as fixed standards, she inhabits them as characters, scenes, and emotional landscapes. She will be accompanied at the Academy by Greg Ruggiero (guitar), Jonathan Chapman (bass), and Ben Zweig (drums).

Folklorist and multi-instrumentalist Alex Harvey will lead a lamplit evening of monster, murder, and revenant songs of the British Isles and early America—the stories people once told to get through the longest nights of the year and that make modern horror look tame. Appropriate for kids ages 12+

Shoots Concerts Series presents the Shiri Zorn Trio . Innovative jazz vocalist Zorn, joined by guitarist Paul Meyers and percussionist Brian Melick, will perform “The Breath Between”—described as an invitation to explore “worlds within worlds,” where American Songbook classics meet Middle Eastern influences and the lush rhythms of Brazil.

PRESALES ARE CLOSED, TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR BEGINNING AT 7:30PM-
$35: GENERAL ADMISSION/$30: ACADEMY MEMBERS.

VKB Band is a New York City-based trio comprised of Rachelle Garniez, Amanda Homi, and Kirsten Thien—three deeply distinctive musicians, all acclaimed performing singer-songwriters with a wealth of collective experience. Together, their voices blend of soaring three-part harmony and carefully crafted musical arrangements. The group utilizes an unusual sonic palette, including percussion from all corners of the globe, an array of squeezeboxes, and a collection of melodic acoustic guitars, pedal-driven electric guitar, and banjo, throwing in the occasional bell and whistle for an added element of surprise.

This popular annual Academy event celebrates artful landscapes in Columbia County. The self-guided tour affords the garden lover (and the voyeur) an opportunity to visit a selection of residential properties in our area that are not open to the public.
Tickets, programs and a map for the self guided tour will be available for pick-up the day of the tour, from 9 to 2:30, at the Market on the Green. The gardens will be open from 10-4. This event takes place rain or shine.
Advance Sales end on July 16 at 9pm. Day of tickets ($40) will be on sale at the Market the Green

Spencertown Academy Roots & Shoots Concerts Series presents Grammy-nominated folk singer-songwriter and author Mary Gauthier with special guest Jaimee Harris: Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of “Mercy Now”, at St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church (5219 County Route 7, Spencertown, NY 12165
“I am excited to announce that this year is the 20th anniversary of the release ‘Mercy Now,’ a record that changed my life. We are celebrating with a vinyl re-release and a tour. I’m not really one to look back, but reflecting on these ten songs feels more like standing still long enough to take stock, and appreciating the grace that brought them into existence,” says Gauthier. “These shows will be a continuation of a long conversation with kindred souls, like you, who understand the alchemy of song. Kindred souls who know a sad song doesn’t make the darkness deeper; it gives it a shape, a name, shines the light on it, and brings forth hope. Yeah, we all could use a little mercy now…”

Spencertown Academy Roots & Shoots Concerts Series presents New York City’s gritty instrumental trio, Big Lazy. The group has flourished for over 20 years playing its singular brand of “guitar noir” and “crime jazz” from downtown NYC clubs to the Opéra National de Lyon. They have forged a new American music from archetypes in blues, jazz, Latin, rockabilly, surf, and film music.

Classical Sunday with cellist Francisco Vila. The program will include “Suite for Solo Cello” by Cassadó, “Fairy Tale Pieces for Cello and Piano” by Janacek, and “Sonata in E Minor” by Brahms. He has appeared as a soloist with renowned orchestras worldwide, including Houston Symphony, Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, Liège Royal Philharmonic, Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, Santander Festival Orchestra, and all principal orchestras in his native Ecuador, among others.

Spottiswoode is an award winning bandleader, singer-songwriter and script writer. He has been the front man of Spottiswood and His Enemies. His music travels the gamut, drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Jim Morrison.

Audience members will discover why a passionate elopement turned into an unhappy betrayal; why a black-and-white photograph would change the destiny of a family; and how an ancient Vedic mantra accompanied a young woman on her voyage across the seas.

The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band was founded by the late Deacon James Edmonds in 1965 in Albany, NY. The band’s core group consists of six members: several singers, guitar, bass, and drums, with keyboards on occasion. With roots in the Stax/Volt style of Southern Soul, they perform both classic and contemporary gospel music—a mix of originals, well-known traditional spirituals and hymns, covers of songs that crossed over into pop music (such as the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There”), and contemporary quartet-style songs that are gospel standards in the church community.

Back by popular demand! The Toronto-based jazz vocalist, Laura Anglade with the Ben Rosenblum trio, has been charming audiences by bringing a fresh face to the vintage sound of classic jazz numbers in both French and English.

Join us us for a staged reading of this new work by Kate McLeod. It’s 1886 at Olana. Emilia, is polishing, laundering and gathering healing herbs from the garden to ease ills of the Church family. Michael, runs the barn and philosophizes with the horses. What finally brings these two Irish immigrants together? Determination. But not before multiple conflicts. In Hudson, it is Father Joseph who deems himself the one to save souls, particularly Emilia’s.

Roots & Shoots concerts presents theJen Chapin Trio.
Singer Songwriter Jen Chapin will be accompanied by GRAMMY© nominated bassist Stephan Crump and “impeccable melodist” (New YorkTimes) Jamie Fox on electric guitar, will debut a new cabaret-style performance of her urban folk songs entitled Anything Goes, and How Did We Get Here? The two-set show weaves historically-informed, jazz-inspired questions and answers about our current and rapidly-changing political moment around old and new selections from Jen’s critically-acclaimed urban folk catalog.

Spencertown Academy Roots & Shoots Concerts Series, in partnership with Ten Barn Farm, presents Grammy and Americana Music Association award-winning singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale at Ten Barn Farm (1142 County Route 22 in Ghent, New York).

The Academy celebrates artful private landscapes in Columbia County and interesting local vendors of crafts, plants, antiques and related merchandise on the lovely Spencertown Green. The self-guided tour of five private gardens will take you to Spencertown, Ghent, Chatham, East Chatham, and Valatie. This year’s destinations are an eclectic mix of gardens reflecting the personal style of each homeowner. Visitors will find several of the landscapes feature spectacular views. Many include vegetable and cutting gardens of varying sizes, stone hardscaping, pools, patios, “outdoor rooms” and a plethora of native perennials, trees and shrubs; something for everyone.
