ABOUT
Debsagar Malik was born in Roing, Arunachal Pradesh on September 8 in a music passionate Bengali family. Being the grandson of the late Ahi Bhusan Malik, a famous cartoonist and art critic, affinity towards art and its various forms was ever-present in his DNA. As a child, he grew up in an environment that celebrated music and dance, and he found his parents, Smt. Rakhi Malik and Dr. Basudeb Malik highly passionate about the same. He eventually came across the Santoor and at the young age of seven was encouraged and inspired to learn this instrument. Thus began his journey into the world of Hindustani classical music. Like a Shikara or a Kashmiri houseboat, the Santoor, which is itself known for its Kashmiri origins, took Debsagar on a path that navigated through beautiful meandering tunes of various raagas. He started his training under the guidance of Shri Tapan Mazumdar on the basics of playing the instrument and Hindustani classical music of the Maihar Gharana. Shri Mazumdar was a disciple of the maestro Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya, who eventually took Debsagar in his own purview a few years later. Debsagar considers himself fortunate enough to have started taking lessons from Pt. Bhattacharya at the young age of 10. His first break as a performer came at the age of 9 when he got a chance to perform at the 3rd International Conference and Gathering of the Elders held at Nagpur in the year 2009. The audience, comprising people from various countries, were thrilled to see his performance as a child artiste, an this served as a big encouragement for him to involve himself more deeply into his learnings. As he grew up, he completed his Visharadh (equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree) in instrumental music from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh by attaining 2nd position in the Eastern Indian Zone in 2016. His development of skills as an artiste and a performer had a taste of the limelight when he was awarded 1st position in the annual instrumental competition and was felicitated at the prestigious Classical Music Conference of the Rajya Sangeet Academy(West Bengal State Music Academy) in Kolkata in 2018. Also, he is a B-high graded Santoor artiste at All India Radio. Debsagar has performed in many reputed programmes, some of them being UK's Milapfest programme "Music for the Mind & Soul", Subah-e-Banaras, Classical Music Conference by Government of West Bengal, among others. Debsagar is a musician and a psychologist also.
