ABOUT
Born in the illustrious family of musicians from Maihar Gharana, Rupak was initiated into Indian classical music at very tender age of 5 years by his parents for starting his unbounded journey in Hindustani Classical music under the tutelage of his eminent grandfather sarod maestro Pandit Kamal Mallick, who was one of the greatest disciples of Sangitacharya Shyam Gangopadhaya & Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Rupak is absolutely fortunate to get the opportunity in obtaining extensive lessons on Hindustani classical music from late Pandit Kamal Mallick for 24 years and received intricate lesson pertain to technical aspect of Sarode and various Ragas in Hindustani Classical music which makes him a complete Sarode player and a gifted torch-bearer for Senia Maihar Gharana of present generation. At present, he is under the able guidance of Pandit Parthosarathy (disciple of sitar maestro Pandit Ravishankar & sarod maestro Ustad Dhanesh Khan). Rupak has distinguished himself for his tonal quality and representation of Ragas both in Tantrakari and Gayaki. Though graduated in Zoology (Hons.) from University of Calcutta, the strong affection for Indian classical music impelled Rupak to complete his M.A. in Music from Rabindra Bharati University in the year 2008 and he came with flying colours by securing 1st class 1st in Master degree for Instrumental Music (Sarod) from Rabindra Bharati University and also received Gold Medal. Rupak has also accomplished a one year course on Music Therapy from Rabindra Bharati University. As a mark of rigorous riyaz and talim, Rupak got National Scholarship for Instrumental Music in the year 2009-2011, from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, New Delhi. During the last 15 years Rupak has been rendering solo recital all over India with utmost satisfaction of audience and connoisseurs of Music. Highlights on some achievements of Rupak Dey: Rupak has secured 1st class 1st in Master degree for Instrumental Music (Sarod) from Rabindra Bharati University and received Gold Medal in 2008. He has received the medal from “Acharya Alauddin Music Circle” for excellence in Instrumental Music (Sarod) at 34th convocation of the Rabindra Bharati University in 2009. He has received National Scholarship of Music, from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, New Delhi for the year 2009-2011. He made his debut at All India Radio (AIR), Kolkata with his solo performance in 1994 in the programme called “Sishu Mahal”. Afterwards he has performed in various programmes at All India Radio like “Galpo Dadur Asor”, “Kishalaya” Yubobvani- AIR etc. He stood 2nd in “Maya Mitra Memorial Instrumental Competition : Sarod” organized by Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture in 2009. Participated in an Orchestra composed & directed by Sri Bhaskar Sen (Sarod player) broadcasted by DoorDarshan. He also took part in many renowned Orchestra directed by Prof. Gautam Ghosh (Rabindra Bharati University) at various locations. He is fortunate to share the stage in numerous esteemed programmes with his Guru, legendary Sarod Maestro Pandit Kamal Mallick. Classical Music Conference (nightlong) conducted by ‘Shibpur Ranjini’ at Shibpur Public library Hall, Shibpur, Howrah in 2009. Program organized by ‘Charukeshi’ at Birla Academy, Kolkata in 2015 and 2018 A cultural evening arranged by ‘Musical Oasis for Resurrection’ under ‘United Minds for Peace Society’ at Kalakunj, Kolkata in 2010. ‘Bhawanipur Sangeet Sammelan’ organised by ‘Bhawanipur Sangeet Samaj’ in 2010. Programme organished by ‘Nada Brahma Sangeet Sevashram’ in 2012. Ramkrishna Mission Narottamnagar, Tirap, Arunachal Pradesh in 2014. ‘Kader Baux Music Conference’, Jangipur in 2011. A nightlong programme organized by ‘Haradhan Smriti Mahavidyalaya’, Chandipur in 2011. A classical evening organized by ‘Bharati Kala Kendra’ at Kalakunj, Kolkata in 2010. Performed at Gyan mancha Kolkata on evening concert by ‘Shyamananda Kalamandir’ in 2015. Classical Programme organized by ‘Aham Music College’, Guwahati, 2010. Classical Evenings organized by ‘Shibpur Suchetana’ (2008, 2009), ‘Shibpur Ranjini’ (2010). Annual programmes arranged by ‘Howrah Vivekananda Ashram’, Howrah and ‘Sarada Ashram Kanya Gurukul’, Jhargram in 2018 and 2019. Classical Programme organized by ‘Howrah Melodic Relation’ in 2015. Rupak has participated as one of the Major musicians in more than 50 shows of a 6-hours long historic play, 'Urubhangam' based on the great Indian epic “Mahabharata” directed by eminent director Mr. Manish Mitra. Performed in different Television programmes on different TV channels like DD-Bangla, Akash-8, Om-Bangla, Srijan TV etc.
