Spencertown Academy Roots & Shoots Concerts Series presents New York City’s gritty instrumental trio, Big Lazy. The group has flourished for over 20 years playing its singular brand of “guitar noir” and “crime jazz” from downtown NYC clubs to the Opéra National de Lyon. They have forged a new American music from archetypes in blues, jazz, Latin, rockabilly, surf, and film music.

This is the story of the renovation of a small green in the village of Kinderhook, NY into a meadow park; inviting curiosity and effort by many, stiff resistance by some, and learning by all. Speaker Sigrid Gray’s gardening background is in public gardens; from gardener at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum to Director of Horticulture at The Battery in NYC, growing the gardens of noted plantsman Piet Oudolf.

This popular annual Academy event celebrates artful landscapes in Columbia County. The self-guided tour affords the garden lover (and the voyeur) an opportunity to visit a selection of residential properties in our area that are not open to the public.
Tickets, programs and a map for the self guided tour will be available for pick-up the day of the tour, from 9 to 2:30, at the Market on the Green. The gardens will be open from 10-4.
Advance Sales end on July 17 at 9am. Day of tickets ($40) will be on sale at the Market the Green

Classical Sunday with cellist Francisco Vila. The program will include “Suite for Solo Cello” by Cassadó, “Fairy Tale Pieces for Cello and Piano” by Janacek, and “Sonata in E Minor” by Brahms. Through his expansive career and commitment to musical excellence, Vila has solidified his position as one of the preeminent performers of his generation, captivating audiences across the world’s most illustrious stages. He performs on a cello made by Vincenzo Panormo in 1790 and the “ex-Janos Starker” Edward Tubbs bow. He has appeared as a soloist with renowned orchestras worldwide, including Houston Symphony, Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, Liège Royal Philharmonic, Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, Santander Festival Orchestra, and all principal orchestras in his native Ecuador, among others.

Spottiswoode is an award winning bandleader, singer-songwriter and script writer. He has been the front man of Spottiswood and His Enemies. He will be joined by musician Kenny White for the release of his new album IT WASN’T IN THE SCRIPT, which focuses on the joys and humiliations of fatherhood and getting older. His music travels the gamut, drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Jim Morrison.

This panel discussion will feature Executive Director Claudia Gould, Director of Library & Collections Jerry Grant, and Collections Manager Sharon Duane Koomler. Topics will include the museum’s now 18,000 object-strong collection, history of the Shakers at Mount Lebanon’s thriving garden seed industry, and plans on the horizon for the museum, including innovative collaborations with contemporary artists and a new flagship facility set to open in downtown Chatham, NY, in 2028.

The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Band was founded by the late Deacon James Edmonds in 1965 in Albany, NY. The band’s core group consists of six members: several singers, guitar, bass, and drums, with keyboards on occasion. With roots in the Stax/Volt style of Southern Soul, they perform both classic and contemporary gospel music—a mix of originals, well-known traditional spirituals and hymns, covers of songs that crossed over into pop music (such as the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There”), and contemporary quartet-style songs that are gospel standards in the church community.

Spencertown Academy Roots & Shoots Concerts Series, in partnership with Ten Barn Farm, presents Grammy and Americana Music Association award-winning singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale at Ten Barn Farm (1142 County Route 22 in Ghent, New York).

The Academy celebrates artful private landscapes in Columbia County and interesting local vendors of crafts, plants, antiques and related merchandise on the lovely Spencertown Green. The self-guided tour of five private gardens will take you to Spencertown, Ghent, Chatham, East Chatham, and Valatie. This year’s destinations are an eclectic mix of gardens reflecting the personal style of each homeowner. Visitors will find several of the landscapes feature spectacular views. Many include vegetable and cutting gardens of varying sizes, stone hardscaping, pools, patios, “outdoor rooms” and a plethora of native perennials, trees and shrubs; something for everyone.

We are pleased to present, in collaboration with the Capitol Region Blues Network, the latest group created by multi-instrumentalist composer Diego Mongue, featuring Chantell on vocals,Chase Bradshawon bass, Cam Bencivenga on guitar & vocals, and Diego Mongue on drums.

This acclaimed quartet features vibraphonist Benedict with Joe Finn on guitar, Pete Toigo on bass, and Pete Sweeney on drums. Their repertoire includes straight ahead jazz standards, Latin-American songs, and original material.
